A to Z challenge: N is for Nutritional Yeast April 16, 2013

Today is day 14 and N is for nutritional yeast.

When most people hear the word yeast, they immediately think of bread yeast. Nutritional yeast is nothing like it. It is a source of protein and vitamins, especially the B vitamins, and is a complete protein. The only B vitamin it doesn’t provide naturally is B-12. It is also naturally low in fat and sodium and is free of sugar, dairy, and gluten. It has a cheesy taste and is absolutely delicious on pop corn, salads or potatoes.

The primary ingredient used for growing it is sugarcane or beet molasses. It is sold in the form of flakes or as a yellow powder and can be found in nutritional stores.

My children absolutely love this stuff especially on popcorn and are greatly disappointed when we run out.

You could use it in place of cheese?

It would depend on the recipe because it’s flaky and works like Parmesan cheese. so excellent for things like popcorn. Also great in meatloaf.
