A to Z Challenge: E is for Elephant April 5, 2013

Day 5 of the A to Z challenge is the letter E. E is for elephant. A very special elephant named Mali.

Mali the elephant has been kept in solitary for 35 years, She was captured at the age of 3 from India and has not seen another of her kind since.   Mali is the only elephant in the Philippines. An effort is being made to get Mali transferred to a Thai conservation forest where she would be with 50 other elephants.  Experts say her mental and physical health has suffered. She has been kept in a barren cage with iron bars.

Philippines’ President Aquino has ordered Mali to sent to a wildlife sanctuary, but the zoo has been blocking the move. The zoo claims that Mali would never survive in the wild since it is the only life she has ever known.

There are always two sides to every story.  Thirty-five years away from others of her kind could be traumatic for her. Life expectancy for a captive elephant is 41 years, Mali is 38. Why not give her the chance to feel the grass under her feet and the freedom she deserves. If she can’t handle being in the wild then return her, but let her try.

You can sign the petition here, let them know she deserves a chance.

omg, that is SO SAD! It’s quality of life that matters, not quantity. I’m not against animals being in captivity, but they need to be treated properly. 😦

  3. How sad! Thanks so much for sharing this story. I’m off to sign that petition.
